Microsoft Access Database and Application Development
Get rapid development of efficient, versatile desktop applications to manage and share information. Integrate with other Microsoft Office applications and data sources for a comprehensive flexible workgroup solution.
Established and popular
Microsoft Access has long been the database application of choice for individuals, small businesses and workgroups. As part of the Microsoft Office Professional (and upwards) suite, many people already possess a copy, thus making it a straightforward selection when it comes to tracking, reporting and sharing information. Add to this the fact that it can be integrated with the other common MS Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and it is easy to see why it is so popular.
Capable and versatile
Do not be deceived into thinking that Access is just a simple database offering simple solutions. It is a relational database that is capable of being shared by a number of users and is underpinned by the comprehensive VBA development language. As well as working with its own database engine (Jet in older versions and a new compatible Access engine in Access 2007), Access can also interface with high-end databases such as MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle and Sybase. At the other end of the spectrum, Access can interface with older desktop databases such as FoxPro, dBase and Paradox.
In the right place
Having said that, Access should not be seen as an alternative to highly scalable, high concurrency, client-server databases such those previously mentioned. Nor is it a replacement for sophisticated multi-tiered or service oriented or web-based architectures that are better handled by products such as MS Visual Studio and the MS .NET Framework. Those platforms are for larger, more costly systems that require high stress performance and high volumes of users.
Access is ideal for the rapid development of a multitude of cost-effective applications in a simple, straightforward Windows operating environment for workgroups of less than 10 users.
