By conforming to published and recognised web standards your website will be more easy to maintain and expand. It will be ready to take advantage of future evolving technologies. It will benefit from improved performance.
Usable
Usability is something that is often taken for granted or overlooked. But it is vital to ensure that visitors to your site do not leave because they are disoriented or confused by the navigation or are unsure what to do next or simply don’t get your message. Usability is all about providing your visitors an effective, efficient and satisfying experience.
Accessible
In the UK, the right of disabled people to have access to the Web is enshrined in the legislation of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995. In particular, the Code of Practice for Section III of the DDA, which refers to websites, was published on 27th May 2002, making it law. In fact, website owners in virtually all countries have a legal obligation not to discriminate against people with disabilities. And given that something like 15% of the population have some sort of disability, that’s a sizeable market proportion. If you’re not reaching them because they cannot access your website, your competitors probably are.
Compatible
Do not assume that just because your site looks fine in IE, it will look the same in Firefox or on an Apple machine. In fact it is not even safe to assume that a site will look the same in both IE6 and IE7. Browsers can be notoriously incompatible. None are 100% standards compliant and IE does have a reputation of being the worst offender. The solution is to test on as many browsers as possible and deal with the inconsistencies.
Search engine friendly
All of the forgoing will help to make your website easier for the search engine robots to interpret and navigate. Whilst website design should always cater for human visitors in the first instance, it should also consider the requirements of the search engine robots.
