PHP scripting

PHP is a popular general-purpose server-side scripting language for Web development that can be embedded into HTML. PHP generally runs on a web server, taking PHP code as its input and creating Web pages as output. It’s an open source product, which means it is has a huge support base and is free to download and use.

One of the benefits of PHP is that it runs on all of the main web servers (Linux, Unix, Windows, etc.) and is available for many different operating systems. This flexibility means that PHP has a wide installation base with over 20 million domains currently hosted on servers that have PHP installed.

MySQL database

PHP and MySQL are two of the components of solution stacks known as:

  • LAMP – Linux (operating system), Apache (web server), MySQL (database) and PHP / Perl / Python and
  • WAMP – Windows (operating system), Apache (web server), MySQL (database) and PHP.

They will also work together on Microsoft’s IIS web server platform.

But the two products are just as capable in their own right. PHP will connect with databases such as Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, Sybase and PostgreSQL. MySQL data can be accessed by development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Access, C++, Java and Ruby (and of course Perl and Python).
